MRI scan| Indications, Contra-Indication, Patient Preparation

It is a technique(MRI scan) of tomography based upon the magnetic behaviour of protonsespecially H+ in body tissue when subjected to magnetic field and RF pulses.

(Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging)

Indications for MRI scan?

  • Tumor of the brain or meninges
  • Skull base or orbital tumor
  • Pituitary tumor
  • Inflammation of the brain or meninges
  • Encephalopathy
  • Encephalitis
  • ENT problems_ following consultation with a Radiologist
  • Demyelinating disease of the brain
  • Congenital problems
  • Head trauma
  • Epilepsy
  • Stroke
  • Post-operative follow-up after brain surgery
  • Spinal cord compression (acute)
  • Trauma
  • Radioculopathy with neurological signs
  • Tumor and infection arising in bone or other connective tissue
  • Infection arising in bone or other connective tissue

MRI scan Contra Indications

Ferromagnetic implants (e.g.: Cardiac peacemaker, metallic orthopaedic devices, metal aneurysm dips, cardiac valve. For cardiac pacemaker and prosthetic value, patient's asked to get the card of the manufacture along with him / her)

Equipment

  1. MRI machine
  2. RF coil

Preparation of the patient (MRI scan)

  • Explain the sequence of the procedure
  • Inform the patient that MRI is painless procedure that does not require ionizing radiation and has no known risk
  • Explain to the patient that he/she will lie flat on a narrow table inside the round opening of large magnet and patient that he/she should lie motionless during the scan
  • Tell him/her that they will hear a soft humming sound and the on-off pulses of radio frequency waves
